<\/strong>Discarding is the practice of returning unwanted or untargeted catches to the sea, often dead or dying, due to a variety of factors, including regulatory restrictions, market demands and operational inefficiencies in fisheries. Whether due to regulatory constraints, market dynamics or operational needs, the problem of discards is felt throughout the fishing industry around the world, taking a toll on ecosystems, economies and communities. Globally, economic losses and ecological impacts on biodiversity are extremely tragic problems. In the global discourse on sustainable fisheries management, an innovative approach has emerged as a potential solution to the challenge of discards: the use of discarded fish in the pet food industry. As the world grapples with the environmental and ethical implications of discarding large quantities of fish in the sea, repurposing this untapped resource represents a promising opportunity to reduce waste, ease pressure on marine ecosystems, and get from once considered a by-product of fishing, to create added value. The pet food industry, with its growing demand for proteinrich ingredients and emphasis on nutritional quality, is poised to play a critical role in transforming discarded fish into a valuable commodity. By incorporating discarded fish into pet food formulations, manufacturers can offer consumers sustainable and responsibly sourced products while reducing the industry’s reliance on traditional protein sources such as land-based livestock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Against this background, developing strategic responses to the growing global population and dwindling food supplies is crucial. In the global discourse on sustainable fisheries management, an innovative approach has emerged as a potential solution to the challenge of discards: the use of discarded fish in the pet food industry. As the world grapples with the environmental and ethical implications of discarding large quantities of fish in the sea, repurposing this untapped resource represents a promising opportunity to reduce waste, ease pressure on marine ecosystems, and get from once considered a by-product of fishing, to create added value. In the pet food industry’s ongoing search for sustainable solutions to address the challenges of food waste and resource depletion, an innovative approach has emerged: using discarded fish to produce raw pet food. The raw pet food industry, which excels at providing minimally processed, biologically appropriate foods for pets, is in a unique position to adopt this sustainable practice.\u00a0 This e-book was prepared as one of the important outputs of the <\/span>MARIPET<\/strong><\/span>, to provide a complied resource from the problems of fisheries discards. This e-book, one of the most important outcomes of the MARIPET<\/strong><\/span> project, presents readers with the story of the transformation of discard, one of the most important problems in global fisheries, into a value-added product to be used in raw food production. The MARIPET<\/strong><\/span> project provides training on the potential use of abandoned fishery\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

products as raw pet food by bringing them ashore. The chapters titled describe the problems in fishing, transforming discarded fish into raw food (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, BARF) material, the process steps used in <\/span>BARF production, food safety and hygiene requirements in the process until the final product is consumed, and finally the classification of pet food in the commercial market and the place of BARF are presented. In general, the narrative language of the book is an average narrative that can be easily understood by the stakeholders of the MARIPET<\/strong><\/span> program, such as aquaculture engineers, food engineers, veterinarians, sector employees and professionals operating in the pet food industry, fishermen, and finally academicians working in the specified professions and students of these professions. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the project partners and scientists who contributed to the writing of the book and hope that it will be useful to our readers.
